Wynken Delirium (L To R):
Yan - Drums / Harris - Bass / Zaihas - Guitars / Zam - Guitars / Ajax - Vokills
How do you soak Malay Archipelago’s culture and tradition into heavy, sludgy, and groovy music? Wynken Delirium from Johor Bahru, Malaysia is twisting necks in conducting the experiments. Arming Semar with electric guitar has never been this serious. Taking its cue from the unceremonious break-up of metal band Gobling in 2005, Wynken Delirium has since established itself by adding Javanese/Sundanese/Balinese influences, odd tempo/beat counts, and unusual arrangements on top of its grunge/doom/metal music foundation. The resulting combination is summarized by the band’s two lowly tuned guitars and bass guitar, frequent switches between growls, clean notes, and high-pitched shrieks in the vocal department, full drumming, and interspersion of traditional instruments such as Javanese/Balinese/Sundanese gamelan and Minangkabau’s cak lempong. The band has been labeled as everything from grungecore, progressive/hard rock, metal, stoner rock, to ethnic metal.

The band came together in the third quarter of 2004 as Gobling out of their obsession for metal, extreme, and sluggish music in their various mutations. These sorrowful men proclaimed that the Malaysian music scene (then, even now actually) was too concentrated on popsicle, nu-metal, rap-rock, eye-bleeding-sentimental-yet-forgettable-tunes, and the equivalent; we see a huge number of earthlings jumping onto popular bandwagons for measly returns of recognition and trend. Well, trend comes and goes, and so do bellbottoms- do not get us wrong, certain departments of the band do dig bellbottoms immensely.
We gleefully conjure ecstatic asphyxiation experiences from 70s hard rock, funk, and groove. Add generous amounts of a potent herbal concoction consisting of sludge, grunge, drudge, drone, and smudge usually associated with mind-warping space rock and/or nadir doom to an already dense overdriven slab, and we have a textbook recipe for insanity- imagine a family of skeletons getting out of their graves, to dance to a midnight circle, only to be crushed by a herd of nutty elephants dropping by. Ow. Well, sometimes we decide to sound mellow, only to take a breather before we trudge the muddy draggy waters yet again.
In early 2006, the band underwent major changes and renamed itself Wynken Delirium. The new incarnation saw a lot of previously supressed influences and directions let go. The band now sounds even much more unpredictable and gila kentang.
